MYSORE: For a city renowned for its tongas, a free medical camp was conducted for horses and ponies. Said to be the first such camp to be held exclusively for horses, the medical camp was organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in association with People For Animals (PFA) near the Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple adjoining the Mysore palace. The organisers distributed medicines apart from giving tonics and calcium to the animals. S.C. Suresh, Assistant Director, Veterinary Hospital, Mysore, said the camp was held as part of the Animal Welfare Fortnight. In all, 65 horses were treated for wounds, and tetanus vaccines administered. All the ponies and horses were de-wormed. The owners of the tongas were given suggestions on maintaining the animals and were told of the importance of the periodic administration of vaccines. The organisers said that they normally conducted cattle camps and organised medical camps for animals in rural areas but this was the first time that such a camp was conducted for horses in the city. A follow-up camp will be conducted after six months as the vaccination has to be repeated to keep the animals immune.
