dated January 31, 1961: Borders of Bhutan

Bhutan is determined to resist to the last man any attempt by any country to violate her territorial integrity. The 38-year-old Maharaja of Bhutan (Druk Gyalpo), Jigme Dorji Wongchuk, declared at a Press conference in Calcutta on January 30 that whether they were physically capable of repelling aggression or not, “we will fight and they can occupy any part of our land only over our dead bodies.” The Maharaja said this in the context of questions asked about Peking's cartographical claim to 300 square miles of border territory.
