Director of Manipal Institute of Communication Varadesh Hiregange speaking at the inaugural function of seminar on Peoples culture and media' at Kundapur in Udupi district on Sunday. Kundapur (Udupi District): “Promoting democratic culture in society is the best antidote to the problems facing the media now. Democratic culture comes out of discussion and debate,” said Varadesh Hiregange, director of Manipal Institute of Communication, here on Sunday. He was speaking at the inaugural function of a State-level seminar on “People's culture and media” organised by the Bhandarkars College and Samudaya Samskritika Sanghatane. Prof. Hiregange said the blurring of line between journalism and public relations evident from the Niira Radia tapes was a matter of serious concern. One of this was the rise of consumerism after the advent of globalisation. Speaking on “Media and the arts”, Associate Editor and Chief of Bureau of The Hindu Parvathi Menon said that cultural organisations such as Samudaya which focused on societal problems should constantly interact with the media and draw attention to their work. Administrative Officer of Academy of General Education H. Shantharam and Working President of Samudaya K. Prabhakaran spoke.
