Shameful

The radio-tagging of Indian students in San Francisco by the U.S. authorities — after shutting down Tri-Valley University on charges of a massive immigration fraud — is shameful and unacceptable. The students have obtained the papers necessary to travel to the U.S.

It is, therefore, the university, not the students who have already been shattered, which needs to be dealt with strictly.

Kumar Varun,

New Delhi

That Indian students have been radio-tagged by the U.S. authorities so that their movements can be monitored is indeed shocking and shameful. The students are innocent. They went to Tri-Valley University for better education. They do not have any criminal record. Nor did they indulge in any criminal activities in the U.S.

Radio-tagging is a violation of human rights, freedom and dignity. It exposes the hypocrisy and double standards of the U.S. which claims to be a champion of human rights, freedom and dignity.

S.P. Sharma,

The swift action taken by the Ministry of External Affairs to render succour to the beleaguered Indian students is commendable. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the American government has termed the TVU as ‘sham' university. The Indian students have spent lakhs on visas and student work permit. They could not have possibly done so deliberately, risking their money and career. Therefore, treating them as accomplices and fixing radio-tags on their ankles to track their movements are ignominious acts. Already, they are upset over the unexpected development that has caused them their education and career. The tagging episode adds insult to injury.

A majority of the students forced to wear the radio-tags, I am sure, were unaware of the violation of immigration rules when they were wooed by the California-based Tri Valley, a ‘sham university' engaged in the subversion of educational laws and in encouraging illegal migrations into the U.S. A number of Indian agents must have been involved in recruiting them with false promises.

Can the U.S immigration be justified in treating the young students as cattle, when Tri-Valley University was mainly responsible for their becoming unauthorised immigrants?

Madan Menon Thottasseri,

Chennai

Whether the students were duped by Tri-Valley University or became victims of an immigration racket will be known only after a thorough investigation.

We should be equally concerned about the thousands of students pursuing futile, if not fake, courses offered by equally sham universities, professional institutions and conmen masquerading as educationists in India.

Raghubir Singh,

Pune
