The concrete jungle claimed the life of this leopard, found run over on the NICE Road early Monday.

BANGALORE: As far as road casualties go, this one was unusual: a leopard, no less. The big cat, a male estimated to be around five years of age, was run over by a lorry around 2 a.m. on Monday near Purvankara apartments on the NICE road stretch that connects Bannerghatta and Kanakapura here.

Forest officials and the Bannerghatta police, who visited the spot visit in the morning, said that the leopard sustained head injuries and died on the spot.

Forest officials said that they received calls from residents in villages bordering the Bannerghatta National Park informing them of a stray leopard that had been attacking dogs in their area and had been on the lookout for the animal.

In 2010, two leopards died in the State similarly. One died three months ago on the Mysore-Bangalore Highway, five kilometres from Ramanagaram. The other was killed earlier in the year on the National Highway connecting Ranebennur and Harihar.

B.K. Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), said the accident occurred seven km from Bannerghatta National Park. “It is not uncommon for leopards to venture out of their habitats at night,” he said.
