CHENNAI: International Masters Rahul Sangma of Delhi and K. Ratnakaran of Kozhikode moved into joint lead at the end of the seventh round of the first St. Joseph's international FIDE-rating chess tournament here on Monday. Sangma latched on to a rook for knight offer from Chennai's A. Shankar and managed to use that advantage to win the game after a long struggle. Ratnakaran faced plenty of tactical opposition from Vikramaditya Sahu. The former's king was better placed and he benefited from a bishop blunder from his opponent to win a marathon 88-move encounter. M. Kunal held Grandmaster R.R. Laxman to a draw in the seventh round in only 17 moves. Laxman and former World under-12 champion N. Srinath, who could not make it to the venue due to a traffic snarl, drew a blank for their sixth round encounter. The results: Seventh round: R. Sangma 6.5 bt A. Shankar 5.5; K. Ratnakaran 6.5 bt Vikramaditya Sahu 5.5; M. Kunal 6 drew with R.R. Laxman 5.5; Karthikeyan Murali 5 lost to P. Shyam Nikil 6; P. Karthikeyan 5.5 drew with P. Phoobalan 5.5; Saurav Khherdekar 6 bt Aravindh Chithambaram 5; S.S. Manigandan 5 lost to N. Srinath 6; S. Ganesh Babu 5.5 drew with C.R.G. Krishna 5.5; S.A. Shazuli 6 bt Vignesh Nr 5.
