Two killed, four injured in college lab accident

Students wanted the college management to replace all old machines at the laboratory


Tirupur: Two persons were killed and four others sustained injuries when a machine in the laboratory of a private polytechnic college at Palappampatti near Udumalpet burst on Wednesday morning.

The dead were Sevvel Kumar (19), a sophomore at the college, and Chelladurai (52), watchman at the institution.

The injured were Shahul Hameed (28), a lecturer; Senthil Kumar (43), college bus driver; Sivaraman (18) and E. Kavimani (19), students. They were hospitalised.

Police said the incident occurred when the laboratory session of the students pursing the diploma in mechanical engineering course was under way. Soon after the incident, the students staged a road roko at Udumalpet demanding the college authorities to disburse solatium immediately to the relatives of the deceased.

They also wanted the college management to replace all old machines at the laboratory.

The students dispersed after the college authorities agreed to give Rs.5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Udumalpet MLA C. Shanmugavelu mediated the talk between the students and the college authorities.
