NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday ordered termination of service of a senior resident doctor of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here who allegedly molested an eight-year-old brain tumour patient. The Minister has also ordered withdrawal of registration of the 30-year-old doctor, Seejoy J, in the super speciality M.Ch. course in surgical sciences at the Institute. This is the first time in the history of the country's premier 54-year-old medical institute that the services of a senior resident doctor have been terminated on the charge of molesting a patient, said official sources. The Minister in his capacity as the President of the premier institute issued the order after receiving initial reports from officials in this regard, they said. A case had been registered against the doctor for allegedly attempting to sodomise the eight-year-old boy who was under treatment for a brain tumour. Initially the doctor was suspended and an internal committee of the Institute was set up to look into the matter. His termination order came soon after the committee submitted its report purportedly finding the doctor guilty of the act. The child was admitted to the neurosurgery ward of AIIMS for a brain tumour operation on January 18. The doctor who was on night duty there allegedly attempted to sodomise the boy on January 23, a day before he was to be discharged from hospital. His parents got a case registered against the doctor at the Hauz Khas police station after the boy narrated the incident to them. The boy was also allegedly threatened by the doctor not to disclose the incident to anyone. The victim, however, reported the matter to his mother soon after he was discharged from hospital. When the parents approached the AIIMS authorities, a fact-finding committee was set up.
