Train services to be regulated

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Railways will regulate train services for 33 days from February 7 to March 11 for taking up major engineering works in connection with the completion of doubling on the Kayamkulam-Mavelikara section.

Railways have decided to carry out most of the works during night for the first 15 days to minimise inconvenience to commuters. Later, traffic blocks varying from three to seven hours will be enforced to enable the Construction Branch of Southern Railway to take up the works.

From February 7 to 21, seven trains will be regulated between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. at railway stations near Kayamkulam. The railway division is planning to attach diesel locos instead of electrical locos during the period. The trains that are likely to be regulated for 10 minutes to one hour during the night are 16348 Mangalore to Thiruvananthapuram, 16344 Palakkad Town to Thiruvananthapuram Amritha Express, 16343 Thiruvananthapuram to Palakkad Town Amritha Express, 16331 Mumbai CST to Thiruvananthapuram, 12432 Hazrat Nizamuddin to Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani Express, 16127 Chennai Egmore-Guruvayur Express and 16128 Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore Express.

Other weekly trains that pass through Kayamkulam junction between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. will also have similar detentions.

Railways have said trains will not be cancelled during the first phase of the non-interlocked working between February 7 and 21.

All the trains that will be regulated will depart at the scheduled time from Thiruvananthapuram Central and will reach the destination with not more than half an hour to one-hour delay.

From February 23 to March 11, blocks will be enforced between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for 10 days and five, six and seven-hour blocks for one or two days to complete the works.
