Letters to the Editor
As a cancer survivor, I want to respond to the article “Let us join hands to fight cancer” (Feb. 4). Depression is the root cause of all evils — this is what the doctors said when I was diagnosed with cancer. I went to the doctor only when I was in the third stage of cancer. Tests, tests and more tests. The treatment was long consisting of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Nausea after the chemo was unbearable. If you are diagnosed with cancer, don't fear. With prayers and support, you can conquer it. Believe that it is curable and you will be cured. I live my life — every moment of it. Cancer has taught me the value of life. J. Pushpa, Madurai As one who lost my grandfather (73) and my brother (18) to cancer, I have many unanswered questions. Why was an 18-year-old teetotaller afflicted with cancer? When I accompanied him for chemotherapy, I saw one-year and two-year olds there. All types of cancer are not preventable. I wish at least those types of cancers which are preventable are fought. People of all ages and groups should be made aware of the causes through suitable communication mediums. Even cartoon shows can be used as an awareness medium as the value system developed in a child does not usually change. M. Shanmuga Priya, Chengalpattu
