Number of school dropouts comes down

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Principal Secretary (Primary Education) Chandana Khan on Friday said the number of school dropouts in the State had come down impressively due to the effective implementation of the Rajiv Vidya Mission (RVM). It had come down from 1.71 lakh in 2009-10 to 1.27 lakh in 2010-11, she said.

Under RVM, the Department of Primary Education in the State runs three schemes - Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level (NPEGEL) and Kasturba Gandhi Baalika Vidyalayas (KGBV) to universalise elementary education.

At a press conference, Ms. Khan said the State had come in for appreciation at a recent meeting in New Delhi for its innovative approach. They include setting up of Rainbow schools for deprived children in urban areas, apart from ‘seasonal hostels' in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Warangal and Khammam for migrant children and a helpline with the toll-free number 1800-425-3525 to rescue runaway children.

Budgetary allocation

The increased budgetary allocation for the State under RVM had helped the State take pro-active initiatives aimed at moving forward with the objective of ensuring that every child, was in school, she said. With the Central grant, the setting up of 248 new Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) would take the total of KGBVs in the State to 743. The KGBVs aimed at making quality education accessible to girls in mandals where female literacy rate was low.

Mr. Mohd. Ali Rafath, State Project Director, RVM, said rescue vehicles with personnel were in position outside main rail and bus stations here.
