Chhota Rajan aide arrested

Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested Zuber Jamadar, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, and recovered a .38 pistol and prohibited bores from him, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said here on Friday.

He was arrested from Ghatkopar on Wednesday.

Mr. Roy said the pistol and six Winchester-made 9 mm rounds he was in possession of were weapons used by the Army and police. “These are high quality centre fire rounds. They are prohibited bores and can cost lakhs of rupees.”

Zuber first came under the police radar during the 1993 Mumbai riots. Cases of rioting and murder were slapped on him. More recently, he was spotted at the house of his cousin and key Rajan aide Farid Tanasha, who was murdered last year. Mr. Roy said his interrogation revealed he had used the pistol to practise at a secluded place at Ratnagiri. “We have to see if the weapon was used for any of the undetected cases.”

Gun trade

In another case, the seizure of 16 country-made weapons in Mumbai pointed to a rise in gun trade, Mr. Roy said.

The police have seized 16 revolvers and rounds manufactured in Bihar from a person. “Recovery of a large number of weapons is a new trend. Earlier criminals traded in one or two arms and would personally go to Bihar to procure them”.
