Sabarigiri, Kakkad projects to be closed for repairs

Staff Reporter

Works are estimated to cost Rs.1 crore

Power to be purchased to meet shortfall

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Kerala State Electricity Board will start repair work at the power houses of Sabarigiri and Kakkad hydro-electric projects at Moozhiyar and Seethathode on Sunday.

KSEB Member (Generation) K. Radhakrishnan and Deputy Chief Engineer Mohammed Ali Rawther, said power generation at the Moozhiyar power house of Sabarigiri hydro-electric project would be stopped from February 5 night to 13 and that of the Kakkad power house at Seethathode from February 6 to 17 owing to the shutdown to facilitate repair and maintenance works.

Meeting held

Mr. Radhakrishnan convened a meeting of officials at Seethathode on Friday to review the arrangements made for the time-bound completion of the repairs.

He said the shutdown of both power houses would also help maintain low water level in the Pampa at a time when major religious conventions would be held on its riverbed at Cherukolpuzha and Maramon during the period.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said arrangements for additional power purchase had also been made to overcome the power shortage of 300 MW due to the shutdown of the Sabarigiri power project.

The repair works would cost around Rs.1 crore, said Mr. Rawther.

Power generation at the mini hydro-electric project Carborundum Universal at Maniyar, that depends on the tail race of the Kakkad project too, would remain close during the period.

The Kakkad project too is a tail-race project of the Sabarigiri project as it functions with the tail-race flows from the Moozhiyar power house.

The meeting held at Seethathode was attended by KSEB Chief Engineer (Generation) P.S.Rajagopal, Deputy Chief Engineer (Pallom station) K.V.Mohanan and other officers.
