NEW DELHI: Automation of road-based public transport in the Capital took a big leap forward on Friday with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurating a new Operations Control Centre (OCC) at the ISBT Building, Kashmere Gate, which would house a very sophisticated monitoring and control system. Speaking at the function, Ms. Dikshit said the state-of-the-art and intricately structured facility would enhance the reliability, efficiency, overall service-quality and attractiveness of the road-based, eco-friendly bus network which accounts for the majority of commuter trips across all transportation modes. Ms. Dikshit said the new set-up would help in real-time monitoring of stage carriage buses to ensure their adherence to performance benchmarks, speed limits, routes, bus stops and punctuality. As a hub, the OCC would receive real-time video feeds from on-site CCTV cameras to enable monitoring of traffic-flow on the BRT corridor and also, if warranted by the situation, to remotely take over the actual operation of the traffic signals. The Chief Minister said the commissioning of the OCC was the “beginning of a new chapter in the functioning of the road-based public transport system'' in Delhi. She said it would help optimise flow of vehicular traffic, safety and convenience of all road users and improve the reach of the mass transit systems. She said the OCC would help in capturing data, whether in the shape of real-time, on-site video footage of road junctions where ISS (Intelligent Signaling System) has been installed or the continuous, real-time feeds of geographic location of buses captured on vehicle-mounted GPS and transmitted by GPRS devices. The ISS being carried out at OCC would help in the efficient and smooth dispersal of vehicles by optimising signal timings based on radar-captured vehicle-volume data. The archived data would also be used for periodic refinement of bus time-tables, service schedules, operating benchmarks, corrective and penal measures and structuring service-supply according to travel demand. During the inauguration, live videos from 16 cameras installed on the Intelligent Signals on the BRT corridor were also shown to the Chief Minister. The tracking of the DTC buses through the Automatic Vehicle Location System was also displayed. Besides, the officials explained the functioning of the electronic ticketing machines, which are a part of the first phase of the Automatic Fare Collection System project.Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the OCC set up by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) Ltd. will help in the efficient management of traffic flow through the integration of various transportation technologies. The OCC, he said, has hi-tech systems like Precision AC's, Modular UPS, VESDA and FM 200 fire detection and suppression systems, CCTV and Biometric Access Control, all of which have been integrated through Building Management Systems. Ms. Dikshit also inaugurated the smart card-based driving licence issue system at I.P. Depot.
