THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eleven records were set on the opening day of the South Zone age-group swimming championship at the LNCPE swimming pool here on Friday.
V. Malavika of Karnataka hogged the limelight on the first day by setting two meet records in the girls' Group III category. Malavika set records in the 100m (1:04.00) and 200m freestyle (2:22.69) races respectively.
National champion Arhatha Magavi of Karnataka was among those who set new records on the first day. Arhatha came first in 100m freestyle in the girls' Group I category in 1:02.66 seconds to beat B. Neeraja's old mark (1:04.55) which was set in 2008.
V. Turbu gave something to cheer for the local fans as he won the only gold for the host and set a new meet record in 100m backstroke in the boys' Group I category. Turbu clocked 1:04.45 seconds to better Aswin Menon's three year-old mark of 1:04.60.
The day's other records were set by Saurabh Sangvekar (400m boys' Group I), Akash Rohit (100m breaststroke, boys' Group I), R. Sushmitha (100m backstroke, girls' Group I), Akhilesh Ram (100m breaststroke boys' Group II); Sheylan Devadason (200m IM. girls' Group III) and Damini K. Gowda (100m backstroke, girls' Group III).
At the end of competition on the first day, Karnataka (402) nosed ahead of Tamil Nadu (388) while host Kerala was a distant third at 191 points.
