Ivanchuk triumphs

NEW DELHI: G. N. Gopal and P. Hari Krishna finished seventh and ninth respectively while top seed Vassily Ivanchuk won the title in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters chess tournament in Gibraltar on Thursday.

In the 10th and final round, Gopal drew with Georgian Salome Melia and Hari signed peace with Hungary's Victor Erdos to finish with seven points each. Ivanchuk defeated Daniel Fridman (Germany) to aggregate nine points, half a point ahead of Nigel Short (England) who stopped Victor Bologan (Moldova).

K. Sasikiran, seeded six, was a surprise loser on the final day after facing Georgia's Nana Dzagnidze. Deep suffered his second loss following the game against Bulgaria's Kiril Georgiev. Young Vaibhav Suri signed off by beating England's seasoned Grandmaster Jon Speelman to finish in 33rd spot after starting his campaign as the 66th seed.
