LUCKNOW: Taking exception to the Samajwadi Party's demand for release of Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday dubbed the SP a “party of goondas”. The government led by Mulayam Singh took no action against criminals, she alleged.

Seen as an SP ally, Raja Bhaiya is facing many cases, including kidnap and murder.

Talking to journalists after the Assembly was adjourned following the Governor's address to a joint sitting of the legislature, Ms. Mayawati said: “The BSP government is the only government which has taken action against its own leaders if they were found involved in criminal activities.”

Hitting back, leader of the Opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav said it was the Mayawati rule that was synonymous with “goonda raj”. The Chief Minister, instead of calling the SP a “goondas' party”, should think about the fact that 14 BSP MLAs were in jail on various charges and that her party men involved in rape cases had gone scot-free, he told journalists.
