Bihar doctors end strike; MLA surrenders
Gaya/Patna: The indefinite strike by junior doctors in Bihar demanding arrest of a Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA whose bodyguards had fired at them in a Gaya hospital was called off on Friday after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar assured them of adequate security.
A delegation of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) Junior Doctors' Association led by its secretary Dr. Kumar called on the Chief Minister in the afternoon. “The Chief Minister has assured us that the State Government will provide full security to the doctors,” Dr. Kumar told PTI later.
Meanwhile, RJD MLA Surendra Yadav whose security guards had fired at the doctors surrendered before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Gaya, R. N. S. Pande, which remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody.
Giving details of the meeting with the Chief Minister, Dr. Kumar said he also assured them of enacting a suitable law (Medical Profession Security Act) on the pattern of the one in Andhra Pradesh besides introduction of a residential scheme for them.
“Soon after the meeting, we had an emergency meeting and decided to call off the strike with immediate effect,” Dr. Kumar said. The strike had begun on Monday. The two bodyguards of Yadav, a four-time MLA from Belagunj in Gaya and a minister in the erstwhile Rabri Devi government, had allegedly fired at the doctors and injured three of them after a heated argument between them.
