Medical Superintendent of JIPMER A.K. Das flagging off a global warming rally at the College of Nursing in Puducherry on Saturday. PUDUCHERRY: The most important message that was conveyed at the ‘Greenathon', an awareness rally organised by the College of Nursing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on Saturday, was that curtailing global warming required efforts from each individual and was not just something for the governments to take care. Individual initiative Flagging off the rally, which saw participation of over 150 students, Medical Superintendent of JIPMER A.K. Das said that the biggest contemporary challenge facing the world was global warming and that the initiative of every individual was necessary to ensure that we a leave a better world for the next generation. Avoid motor vehicles Pointing out that being “energy conscious” at the individual level was an important step towards countering climate change, he said avoiding motor vehicles for short distance travel and encouraging walking and usage of cycles would go a long way in reducing per capita energy consumption apart from great medical benefits. The event also saw the students initiating a tree planting drive in the JIPMER campus and distribution of awareness pamphlets to people.
