Women's role in getting award lauded
Staff Reporter
Tiruvannamalai: Union government has given an award to Tiruvannamalai district for ensuring more women participation and transparency in payment disbursal in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), M. Rajendran, district Collector said.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said that Tiruvannamalai was one of the 10 districts selected from across the nation for the award for 2009-10.
During that year, women's share in the total jobs generated under the scheme was 83 per cent and women form 78 per cent of the total job card holders in the district. “We pay workers every Tuesday in the presence of village monitory committee members which would have also impressed the authorities who assessed the performance of the district in the scheme,” he said.
