Call to set up R&D unit to tackle effluent discharge

Staff Reporter

‘Find a solution to the problems faced by textile units'

Tirupur: The Builders Association of India's Tirupur branch chairman M. R. Navaneethakumar has called upon the state government to set up a research and development (R &D) organisation to find a permanent solution to the effluent discharge problem faced by the dyeing industry.

Crisis

“It is essential as the crisis in the dyeing industry following the closure of all dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur cluster as per the order of Madras High Court, has started spelling a cascading effect on the construction activities in the cluster,” he told reporters here on Friday.

According to him, the construction activities have been picking up significantly in the recent times only to get a setback in the form of dyeing units' closure.

River sand

Another issue, which the BAI-Tirupur branch wanted the government to address was the scarcity in getting raw materials like river sand for construction activities.

“The government should promote products like m-sand, which is obtained from blue metals, as a substitute for river sand and bricks made of fly-ash, to bring down the construction cost as well as to prevent the environmental degradation,” Mr Navaneethakumar said.

He pointed out that a cubic feet of sand, which was costing Rs. 18 about four months ago, is now priced at Rs 60. “Moreover, the river sand resources is fast getting depleted,” Mr. Navaneethakumar said.
