Bharadwaj takes above-50 title

CHENNAI: Ajeet Bharadwaj of Delhi clinched the above-50 age category title in the T.S. Santhanam Memorial National veterans' tennis championship with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Rajasthan's Amarjeet Singh Chaddha at the Mylapore Club, here on Saturday.

Bharadwaj, competing in his first ever competitive tournament, looked like running away with the match before Chaddha surprised him in the second set, taking the final into the decider.

The other singles winners included G. Chelliah (above-45), A.J.S. Chatwal (above-55), Dr. Balachander (above-60), and Dr. Subramanian (above-65).

N. Murali, Senior Managing Director, Kasturi and Sons Limited, gave away the prizes. Ram Santhanam, Chairman and Director, Wheels India, was also present.

The results (all finals): Singles:

Above-45: Chelliah (TN) bt Sharad Tak (Raj) 6-0, 4-0 (conceded); Above-50: Ajeet Bharadwaj (Del) bt Amarjeet Singh Chaddha (Raj) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; Above-55: A.J.S. Chatwal (Del) bt M. Suresh (AP) 6-2, 7-6(2); Above-60: Dr. Balachander (TN) bt Tahir Ali (Mah) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Above-65: Dr. Subramanian (TN) bt K. Deenadayalan (TN) 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles:

Above-45: Karthik Kailash & Krishnakumar bt Chandrasubhan & Arunkumar 6-2, 6-3; Above-50: Kalyanraman & John Selvakumar bt Poonacha & Amarjeet Singh Chaddha 6-2, 2-6, 11-9. Above-55: Chatwal & M.R. Ramesh bt Timothy & Sanjay John 6-3, 6-2. Above-60: T.N. Prasad & A.G. Krishnan bt Venkatachalam & Gangadaran 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 .
