IOB triumphs

Chennai: Conquering the initial challenge with methodical efficiency, Indian Overseas Bank beat Indian Bank and annexed the SNJ.No 1-All Star Trophy for men in the invitation basketball tournament which concluded on Saturday at the Corporation Playground, T'Nagar.

IOB which led 39-22 at half-time eventually emerged winner by a wide margin of 70-47.

All that Indian Bank could do was to put up a stiff fight in the early part. It even led 18-15, but progressively, the IOB stars, led by Harish and Paul, struck a winning rhythm to snatch the prize and a cash award of Rs. 25,000. Indian Bank won Rs. 20,000.

Earlier, Southern Railway, propelled by the proficiency of Geethu Anna Jose (17), defeated SRM-Rising Stars for the G. Ramaswamy Memorial Trophy.

Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, Member of the Board and President (Construction) Larsen and Toubro Ltd. presided and gave away the prizes in the presence of Mr. R. Ilangovan, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association.

The results: Men: Final: 70 (Harish 15, Abileck Paul 20, Pratham Singh 15)beat Indian Bank 47 (Senthil Murugan 17, Puvaneswaran 15). Semifinals: IOB 56 (Mihir Pandey 17, Satish Kumar 10, Harish 10) beat Armed Police 43 ( Jayachandran 14, Janakiraman 10); Indian Bank 60 (Amarnath Gopi 10, Javed Khan 10, Sentil Murugan 10, Deepak Venkatesh 10) beat ICF 46 (Akilan 13, Poobalan 11).

Women: Final: Southern Railway 45(Geethu Anna Jose 17, Kokila 11) beat SRM-Rising Stars 25 (Sangeetha 10, Karpagam 10). Semifinals: SRM Rising Stars 75 (Karpagam 11, Sangeetha 18, Apoorva 21, Rajalakshmi 12) beat Madras Nationals 35 (Sunita Suren 22); Southern Railway 63 (Neena Harindran 17, Kokila 18, Nithya 18) beat Slammers BC 40 ( Divya 10, Vyishali Kemker 10, Janani Pinki 11) .
