KOCHI: The World Cup cricket fever is fast spreading and Kochi had a close look at the prized trophy on Saturday. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Taj Gateway and later at Oberon Mall, big crowds gazed at the ICC Cricket World Cup, which was in the city for a day today, all of them hoping that Dhoni and his boys would lay their hands on it when the championship winds up in Mumbai on April 2. Roger Binny, a star of the triumphant Indian team which won the World Cup in 1983, too was in the city, to add a touch of glamour to the occasion. “I've been travelling here as a schoolboy cricketer and have played in most of the grounds here,” said the handsome 55-year-old, the top wicket-taker at the 1993 World Cup. “And I think it's very appropriate that the World Cup is in Kerala.” “We are honoured to have the World Cup here in Kochi,” said the Kerala Cricket Association secretary T.C. Mathew. There were a lucky few who could pose near the World Cup and take snaps even as sturdy bouncers kept a cautious eye. “It's made of silver and gold, weighs 11 kg and it's priceless,” said K. Jayanand, the circle head of Reliance Communications, the global partner for World Cup 2011 which brought the trophy to Kochi. “We have a heavy security for the Cup. It was first displayed in Jaipur and Kochi is the second. Kochi is just one of the four places where the Cup will travel in India,” said Mr. Jayanand. “After each trip, it is taken back to Mumbai under heavy security.” The World Cup begins in Dhaka on February 19.
