dated February 7, 1961: High altitude research

A big balloon, made out of thin polyethylene plastic film and filled with hydrogen gas, was launched on February 5 from the grounds of the Osmania University by a group of scientists of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research led by Prof. M.G.K. Menon.

Prime Minister Nehru, accompanied by the State Governor, Mr. Bhimsen Sachar and the Chief Minister, Mr. D. Sanjivayya, watched the flight, arranged with a view to studying cosmic radiation.

About 40 such balloon flights are proposed to be organised by the Tata Institute during the three-month period from the beginning of February to the end of April ranging in diameter from 80 feet to 200 feet. These balloons would carry scientific instruments for research at high altitudes.
