Industrial training institutes proposed in naxal-prone areas, says Kharge

Hubli: Union Minister of Labour and Employment M. Mallikarjun Kharge has said the Labour Department is planning to set up industrial training institutes (ITI) in naxal-prone areas of various districts across the country for making the unemployed youth employable.

Addressing presspersons after participating in the foundation-laying ceremony for the modernisation of ESI Hospital in Hubli on Sunday, Mr. Kharge said the department had sought additional allocations in the coming budget and proposed several new initiatives.

The Labour Ministry proposes to involve the State governments in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to establish ITIs in areas where naxalites were active. “By providing the requisite training to the unemployed youth, we can make them employable, and it will solve many problems,” he said. According to Mr. Kharge, the Labour Department had sought additional funds for several measures to be initiated for the welfare of the people in the unorganised sectors. To a query, Mr. Kharge said that the Union Government had asked the Karnataka Government to provide 20 acres of land for setting up skill development centres (SDC) at Gulbarga and Bangalore and had already earmarked Rs. 100 crore for the purpose.

“The State Government should provide Rs. 100 crore and provide us the land for setting up the centres. We hope the State Government will provide the land at the earliest,” he said.

Labour Minister of Karnataka B.N. Bache Gowda clarified that already two places had been identified in Bangalore and Gulbarga for the purpose. However, since the land available was not adequate, the process of identifying suitable land was on.

Mr. Kharge said projects worth about Rs. 2,000 crore had been initiated by the department in Karnataka.
