Woman, paramour held for brother's murder

Staff Reporter

Father also arrested for destroying evidence, say Police

Had allegedly an eye on her brother's property

The woman knew a few people with criminal past

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old woman, her father and paramour have been arrested in connection with the murder of her brother in Pushp Vihar here this past month. The woman allegedly had an eye on her brother's property.

The murder came to light on January 14 when an in-charge at a cremation ground in Ambedkar Nagar noticed strangulation marks around the neck of the deceased, Sanjit, after the body was laid on the pyre. When he brought it to the notice of the deceased's family, they insisted on the cremation. At this, the in-charge grew suspicious and made a call to the PCR.

A police team reached the spot and took the body in its custody. The post-mortem report suggested “asphyxia due to strangulation” as the cause of death and a murder case was registered at the Saket police station.

During investigation, the police found that Sanjit's sister Rekha knew a few people with criminal past. The police detained Rekha and her paramour Anil (26) when she came to meet him at Khanpur Chowk on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. During interrogation, the two purportedly confessed to having murdered Sanjit and were arrested. Rekha's father Sher Singh (52), a Class IV government employee, was also arrested on charge of destroying evidence.

It was further revealed that Sanjit, an alcoholic, was expecting over Rs.7 lakh from the sale of his share in ancestral property and Rekha had an eye on the money. She hatched a conspiracy along with Anil, a resident of Faridabad, to eliminate Sanjit. She promised to pay Anil Rs.2 lakh for the job, the police said.

When Rekha's father and her brother Rakesh were away from home on January 13, Anil came to their house and had drinks with Sanjit till late at night. When Sanjit fell asleep, Rekha and Anil allegedly strangulated him with a “chunni”. Anil then left for Faridabad. Sher Singh returned home the next morning to find Sanjit dead and noticed the strangulation marks, but he chose to keep mum.

Rekha, who was married in 2002, had come to stay with her parents last year following a quarrel with her husband. Her in-laws had hired Anil to kill her, but he fell in love with her when he first met her at a court in Faridabad. Anil has a criminal past. Rekha was earlier romantically involved with Anil's younger brother Vinod as well, the police said.
