‘Governor's decision has insulted Kannadigas'

Special Correspondent

Meet warns of stir if decision on scholar is not reconsidered

Governor's move on rejecting honorary doctorate to Chidananda Murthy 'condemned'

Dubbing of other language films into

Kannada opposed

M. Chidananda Murthy

BANGALORE: Amid thunderous applause by an over 75,000-strong crowd, the 77 {+t} {+h} Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has adopted a resolution to “condemn” the Governor's decision on withdrawing consent to confer a honorary doctorate on the noted scholar M. Chidananda Murthy proposed by the University of Bangalore in unequivocal terms

Passing the resolutions on the concluding day of the three-day sammelan in compliance with its tradition through voice vote of the delegates here on Sunday, the sammelan said that it was unfortunate that the “decision of the Governor has insulted not only the literary community of the State but also Kannadigas. The Kannada Sahitya Parishat as the literary and cultural representative of Kannadigas could not tolerate this on any grounds. The authorities concerned should intervene and take steps to set right the gubernatorial decision in the larger interest. The parishat would launch a Statewide agitation if the decision was not reconsidered at the earliest.”

Other resolutions

Not devoid of intended irony, the sammelan passed a resolution urging the Government to change its attitude and act in favour of the language-related issues by casting off the “indifference” it had exhibited towards the resolutions on Kannada-related issues such as culture, education, administration, water and border, in the past 76 {+t} {+h} sammelans.

Another resolution urged the Government not allow and encourage the resurging trend of dubbing of other language films into Kannada, which was kept away from the State since four decades. The dubbing culture would be detrimental to the development of original Kannada cinema, the resolution emphasised.

A resolution on education called for compulsory imparting of education in Kannada medium from class one to IV and bring in uniform education policy. Besides, in compliance with the court's ruling, Kannada should be made a compulsory language in compliance with the trilingual formula for those studying in Kendriya Vidyalayas.

The important resolutions passed in the sammelan include application of Article 317 for ensuring the development of Hyderabad Karnataka region and an appeal to non-Kannada speaking persons to learn Kannada.
