Diabetes Day valedictory event

Marked by events to spread awareness of the disease

VELLORE: Cultural programmes creating awareness of diabetes prevention and control and the prize-distribution for various competitions marked the valedictory function of the World Diabetes Day-2010 celebrations organised by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the Christian Medical College, Vellore on various days spread over October 2010 to February 5, 2011.

Students of eight schools and five colleges participated in the music and dance competition. Teams from the E.V.R.N. Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Vellore, Seventh Day Adventist Matriculation School (SDAMS), Vellore, St. John's Nursing College and Karigiri College of Nursing, which won prizes performed at the valedictory function on Saturday. The biggest applause was reserved for 16-year-old P. Keerthi, Type-I diabetic patient and a XI standard of Gil Adharsh School, Chennai who sang a few Tamil numbers. He has so far given 600 music concerts in India and Sri Lanka.

George Chandy, Director, MIOT Hospitals, Chennai who distributed the prizes said that he hoped that awareness programmes such as these would help bring down the incidence of diabetes in India, where morbidity and mortality due to the disease was increasing. Nihal Thomas, Professor and Head, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Unit-I, CMC participated.

Following are the prize-winners in the various competitions conducted in connection with the World Diabetes Day celebrations:

Song (schools): I prize--Ida Scudder School; II prize--SDAMS; III prize--EVRN GGHSS.

Dance (schools): I--SDAMS (boys); II--SDAMS (girls); III--EVRN GGHSS.

Song (colleges): I--VIT; II--St. John's Nursing College; III--Karigiri College of Nursing.

Dance (colleges): I--St. John's Nursing College; II--Karigiri College of Nursing.

Cookery: I--Latha Ravikumar; II--Meenakshi; III--Roja Reka.

Nursing quiz: I--Divitha, Sharmila Jeyarani, Daliya Susan Varghese and Shakila; II--Mayuri Rachel Cycil, Nilophor Begum, Sathya and Ritu Sarkar; III--Catherine Priyadarshini, Mathew Varghese, Sini Chacko and Vaishnavi.

Painting: I--Jonathan Vijayakumar (XI std., Ida Scudder School), II--Swathi Priya (IX std., Sunbeam MHSS), III--S. Anika (XI std., Auxilium GHSS).

Tamil essay: I--A. Yousuf Sherif (XII std., Government Muslim HSS), II--V. Vijaya Kumar (XII std., TMKV Boys HSS, Kangeyanallur), III--I. Praveen (X Std., TMKV BHSS).

English essay: I--Kirti Anna Koikkara (XII std., Ida Scudder School), II--Rakshana J. (X std., (Shrishti MHSS), III--Y. Lavanya (XII std., EVRN GGHSS).
