COIMBATORE: Handloom weavers in Somanur, Karumathampatti and neighbouring areas stopped work on Monday to protest against the murder of the weaver-couple Shanmugam and Manonmaniam. The two were murdered on Saturday at their house in Segudanthali Pudhukadu. To protest against the murder, traders also downed shutters following a call given by the Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam. Policemen were posted to prevent untoward incidents. Meanwhile, the police investigating the case said they had made some headway in the case and were confident of arresting the accused in the next couple of days. The couple were beaten to death with an iron rod. The brutal murder for gain was noticed by the relative of the deceased when she heard the children crying inside the house. It is learnt that Shanmugam had gone to the powerloom shed to do some cleaning early in the morning while his wife followed him. The police suspect the involvement of two persons, working as casual labourers, in the murder. A sniffer dog and forensic experts were pressed into service. Superintendent of Police N. Kannan visited the scene of crime. Three special teams have been formed to apprehend the culprits.
