Call to set up freedom fighter circuit

Staff Reporter

To highlight contributions of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram

Tuticorin: To enthuse the visitors of Tuticorin, a freedom fighter circuit, including a museum highlighting the contributions made by the freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram, the son of Tuticorin soil, should be established at the old Tuticorin Port.

Since it was the place from where Swadeshi Stream Navigation Company launched shipping services under the initiative of Chidambaram, the monuments depicting his life history, works on Tamil Literature, the Navigation Company's manifesto and the growth and development of Tuticorin Port should be exhibited, Ilasai Manian, secretary, Ragunathan Library and Bharathi Research Centre, Ettayapuram, said here on Monday.

Entertainment sought

The circuit should also offer ‘sound and light' show at regular intervals.

Since expectations were high among people, such arrangements would certainly entertain the flow of tourists here, he added.

With days approaching fast for the resumption of much awaited ferry services after long years from Tuticorin to Colombo and vice versa, the authorities concerned should take all out efforts to set up a museum.

Not surprisingly, Tuticorin is well known for historical significance.

Most of the freedom fighters hailed from Tuticorin. Memorials were also established in recognition of their contributions and sacrifices to the nation.

The State Government also assured that all districts across Tamil Nadu would get museum.

It was disclosed during the Classical Tamil conference staged at Coimbatore in the previous year, Mr. Manian recalled.

The relics of antiques, which symbolise the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, should be brought to the museum.

The antique discovered at Adichanallur near Mukkani and Korkai under Srivaikuntam taluk of Tuticorin district, which was established with a port in ancient days, could also be displayed at the old Port, where a Museum is required mandatorily.

The Government should consider these demands to honour the freedom fighters, he pointed out.
