Suspected Maoists set trucks ablaze

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: Suspected Maoists set ablaze three trucks on National Highway 6 in two incidents in the Jhargram region of West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district on Monday for defying their call for a day-long bandh. The helper of one of the trucks sustained serious burn injuries in the incident.

The rebels had called a ‘Bharat bandh' in protest against steep rise in prices of essential commodities.

According to Jhargram district's Additional Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar, a group of 60 suspected Maoists stopped the trucks on the national highway, forced the drivers and helpers get off the vehicles and set them on fire.

“When the helper of one of the trucks, Ajay Giri, tried to prevent the Maoists from torching the vehicle, he was pushed towards the burning vehicle leading to his burn injuries. He has been admitted to the Jhargram sub-divisional hospital where his condition is stable,” Mr. Kumar said.

While two iron ore-laden trucks coming from Orissa were set on fire in the Purnapani forest area, the other truck, going from Kolkata, was torched in the Guptamani area.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incidents, Mr. Kumar said.
