Three arrested for robbing elderly woman

NEW DELHI: Three young men who along with a juvenile robbed an elderly woman of her belongings at her house in New Friends Colony here on Monday have been arrested. Jewellery worth Rs.4 lakh and Rs.1.63 lakh of stolen cash have purportedly been recovered from them.

The police received a complaint from 63-year-old Lalita Devi that two men managed to gain entry into her house posing as telephone mechanics and finding her alone, assaulted her and robbed her of Rs.3 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs.4 lakh.

After they entered her house, they made a call on her landline from their mobile phone pretending to check if it was working. Another call was made to her husband. Investigations into call details led the police to zero in on one Subhash, who had employed as a driver by an area resident a few days ago.

Enquiries revealed that Subhash had gone missing on Monday morning. The police obtained his photograph from his employer and showed it to the elderly woman, who identified him as one of the robbers. Subsequently a hunt was launched for Subhash and he was arrested at Taimur Nagar.

During interrogation, Subhash disclosed the names of the other accused, Sonu Singh, Om Prakash and a juvenile. At his instance, the police arrested Om Prakash and Sonu. The accused had planned the robbery at the victim's residence after Om Prakash, who used to teach her grandchildren, tipped them off about the time when she would be alone.

Om Prakash has graduated from a reputed university and takes home tuitions.
