EC to approve PR decision if it is ‘proper'

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: As actor-politician Chiranjeevi is doing spadework for the formal merger of his Praja Rajyam (PR) with the Congress, the Election Commission (EC) has said that it had no objection to approving the request of the party provided the decision was within the ambit of law and taken in compliance with the party's constitution in its “true letter and spirit”.

EC sources, which said it was too early to comment on the issue as there was no formal letter from the PR so far, added that the symbol of the party (rising sun), may be frozen indefinitely if a specific request was made. “Normally, we don't give frozen symbols to other parties,” said an official. Asked what wording the Commission would use in its order approving the plea of PR – “merger” or “cessation of existence of the party” – he said this depended on how the communication mentioning the party's decision was made by the Praja Rajyam.About the position of PR MLAs in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, he said this would be taken care of by the Speaker once the formal order approving the communication (request) of PR was issued by the Commission, he said. “All this will be possible only if the decisions are taken as per the provisions of the party constitution, which was submitted to the EC by PR at the time of registration and subsequent amendments, if any,” he pointed out.
