Footballer tests positive
NEW DELHI: Mumbai FC's Nishant Mehra has tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol. The midfielder tested positive in an in-competition test in Pune recently, becoming the first footballer to gain that dubious distinction in the I-League.
Mehra could face a lenient punishment if he can show how the drug got into his body and that he did not take the substance to enhance performance. Tetrahydrocannabinol comes under the class of substances called cannabinoids that includes recreational drugs like cannabis, hashish and marijuana.
These drugs are classified under ‘specified substances' that can attract a punishment ranging from a mere warning to two years of ineligibility.
If his ‘B' sample comes ‘positive', Mehra's case would be brought up before the Anti-Doping Disciplinary panel by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). — Special Correspondent
