Nagraj, Geetha win 100m

CHENNAI: B.G. Nagraj and the S. Geetha emerged the fastest runners of the meet when they won their 100m events in the all-India Railway athletics championship which got underway here on Wednesday.

Nagraj clocked 10.78s while Geetha was timed at 12.03s.

Another highlight of the day was the new meet record set by international Preeja Sreedharan of Southern Railway, who clocked 34:00.28s to win the 10,000m race. Preeja bettered her own previous mark of 34:19.6s set in 2009 at Bangalore.

In all, 22 teams of various Railways are participating with more than 500 athletes, including Commonwealth and Asian Games medallists.

Other results (winners): Men: 400m: Joseph Abraham (SR) 51.67 s; 800m: Sajesh Joseph (SR) 1:54.35s; 10,000m: Soji Mathew (WR) 30:08:99s; Triple jump: Amarjeet Singh (NR) 16 mts; Shot put: Sakthi Singh (CR) 17.18m.

Women: 400m: K.A. Sonia (SR) 1:01.19s; 800m: O.P. Jaisa (ER) 2:12.32s; Triple jump: M.A. Prajusha (SW) 12.64m; Javelin: Saraswathy (SR) 50.60m; Discus: Rinku Rani Sangwan (WCR) 47.13m .
