Gulbarga: A statue of the 12th Century social reformer Basaveshwara is likely to be installed soon on the banks of The Thames in London.

Mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth Neeraj Patil, who was born and educated in Gulbarga district, has mooted the idea of installing Basaveshwara's statue in London. Incidentally, Dr. Patil, a specialist in Emergency Medicine, was the first Asian to become the Mayor of Lambeth.

Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Patil said, “It was my dream to spread the philosophy of Basaveshwara beyond the borders of India and the installation of the statue of the great social reformer is the first step towards realising my dream.”

Explaining how difficult it was to identify land for the purpose, Dr. Patil said that a community, which owned a piece of land on the banks of The Thames, had agreed to give the land.

“We have submitted a proposal to the Planning Committee of British Parliament for approval,” according to Dr. Patil.

Once the Planning Committee gives its nod, the proposal would be sent to the Minister for Culture, Media and Sports for the final clearance.

On his desire to contribute his bit for the people of Gulbarga, Dr. Patil observed that the condition in hospitals was appalling and more needs to be done on extending emergency services to the needy.

“I would be glad to extend my expertise in establishing an emergency medicine wing in the existing hospitals in Gulbarga,” he said.
