CPI(M) decries collection of garbage tax, burns GO copies

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Alleging that the State government “betrayed” the people by levying tax on garbage contrary to its earlier promises, activists of the CPI (M) city committee on Friday burnt copies of the government order relating to tax on garbage at the VMC main office.

CPI (M) State committee member Ch. Babu Rao and city secretary R. Raghu said that the Congress government had let down the people by releasing GO Ms. No. 973 that allowed the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to levy a separate charge for lifting of garbage. This amounted to a burden of Rs.8 crore on the people.

Though the Government gacktracked and cancelled the GO after a hue and cry was raised in the VMC general body, it brought back the issue by ignoring the resolution passed by the general body.

They said that the officials had already started collecting the garbage tax at some places in the city, and this must be stopped forthwith. Instead of looking for ways to burden the people, the government must immediately focus its attention on bringing down the spiralling prices of essential commodities, they said.
