Russell's viper, cobra rescued

Special Correspondent

Coimbatore: A Russell's viper, measuring three feet, was rescued from ITI Nagar behind Cheran Nagar in Kavundampalayam and was released into the wild at Mangarai, near Anaikatti.

Following information about a snake being sighted, activists of OSAI, a non-Governmental Organisation visited the place.

Two students who have rich experience in catching snakes, Nirmal doing his M.Sc in Software and Keerthi, studying B.Sc Agriculture, managed to catch the snake and found it to be a Russell's viper coming under Schedule II of the Wild Life Protection Act.

The snake was taken in a gunny bag and released at Mangarai, said president of OSAI K. Kalidasan.

In the afternoon, the organisation got a call saying that a cobra was sighted at LGP Nagar in Saravanampatty.

Nirmal along with a team visited the place and caught it. Later, it too was released at Mangarai.
