Telangana JAC asks people not to pay taxes

People also urged not to buy bus tickets while travelling and to refuse paying power bills

Call for general strike and bandh in Telangana districts on February 22

Non-cooperation includes programmes from February 13 to create awareness

M. Kodandaram

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Friday asked the people of Telangana not to purchase tickets while travelling in RTC buses and refuse payment of electricity bills, property taxes, toll gate collection and other dues to government.

It gave this call as part of the schedule for non-cooperation in Telangana from February 17 after a meeting of the steering committee of the JAC. A general strike and simultaneously a bandh was called in Telangana districts on February 22.

Briefing reporters later, JAC chairman M. Kodandaram, convenor K. Swamy Goud and other office-bearers also called upon people to boycott census enumeration as part of the movement demanding separate Telangana.

Awareness

The non-cooperation schedule includes pre-movement programmes from February 13 to create public awareness.

The actual movement in the initial phase will, however, commence on February 17 with the State government employees in Telangana not attending to their duties though they would be physically present at their workplaces. In the subsequent days, picketing of offices, rasta roko, blocking National Highway 9 and burning of effigies of leaders who do not cooperate in the movement will follow.

The pre-movement agitation would comprise jail bharo on February 15 and dharna in front of the houses of Congress and TDP MLAs the next day, Mr. Kodandaram said.

Extended meeting

He also said an extended meeting of the steering committee would be held here on Saturday to discuss enforcement of the schedule.

He warned of clashes if the government tried to outsource staff from the coastal districts as substitutes of regular employees in view of the movement.

The agitation would inevitably inconvenience some sections of public, he added.

Mr. Kodandaram announced constitution of a fact-finding committee to go into the alleged harassment of public at meetings attended by the Chief Minister as part of Rachabanda in Karimnagar and Warangal districts on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the JAC of Telangana advocates called upon their colleagues not to attend cases in courts presided over by judges from coastal districts from February 17.

‘Chalo Raj Bhavan'

Joint Action Committee convenor M. Rajender Reddy said a ‘Chalo Raj Bhavan' by advocates would also be held on February 21.
