For income from non-aeronautical streams Promoters to get a share of monthly gross sales Nedumbassery: Seeking to augment its income from non-aeronautical streams, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is expanding the business of airport-retailing by entering trade of electronic goods. According to senior CIAL officials, the airport company would soon launch duty-free retail outlets for electronic goods in the international arrival and departure duty free areas. It was in the process of identifying and selecting retailers for supplying goods. The company envisaged a world-class shopping area with reputed brands for operating the retail outlets in and around the airport as part of the initiatives to convert the passenger in to a travelling customer, they said. CIAL proposed a long-term partnership to enable optimum exploitation of the airport's retail potential. The promoter would get a share of the monthly gross sales. The initiative would also help arriving passengers to save on excess baggage duty. Airport retailing had been a major source of revenue for CIAL with the total sales maintaining an average annual growth of 30 per cent since inception. Given the10 percent annual average growth in international passenger movement, the income from this segment is set to touch Rs.100 crore soon. In the 2009-10 fiscal, CIAL's total revenue through various non-aviation sources were around Rs.100 crore. The duty-free business alone contributed Rs.70.19 crore. The exhibition and trade fair centre project, aimed at tapping business traffic, would be inaugurated in August. CIAL had allotted 3 acre near the CIAL golf course to set up the centre with an operational area of 35,000 square metre.
