Intoxicating beauty of sinuous dance

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Dance in its most stylish, experimental and modern forms will be unfolded before aficionados during a contemporary dance festival, ‘Soundarya Lahari,' being organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations here from Wednesday to Saturday.

A string of internationally known dancers and theatre persons will perform during the event, which is coming to the city for the second time.

“People will get to enjoy a variety of dance forms in its most exciting and experimental forms during the event,” T. Velayudhan, Deputy Director of the department, told The Hindu.

Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, Mohiniyattam exponent, will inaugurate the festival at Nalanda Auditorium on Wednesday evening. The inaugural ceremony will be followed by an experimental dance performance by danseuse Anita Ratnam, unravelling myriad expressions of womanhood through a fusion of Bharatanatyam and a variety of foreign dance forms.

A performance, named ‘Vajra,' by Madhu Nataraj, daughter of the famous Kathak guru Maya Rao is the key attraction on Thursday.

The third day will feature a performance, titled ‘Dravya Kaya,' by Abhyas from New Delhi. Dravya Kaya is an experimental piece using yoga, contemporary dance and Bharatanatyam as its vocabulary, focussing on select episodes from the Ramayana, such as the earth upon which the ‘Lakshman rekha' is drawn, the ‘danam' that Sita offers to the sadhu (Ravana), the ‘Valkala Vastra' (bark garment) that Sita has to wear when she accompanies Rama to the forest and the rocks that the ‘Vanarasena' (the army of monkeys) use to bridge the ocean. The show will be choreographed by the dancers Navtej Johar and Sudeep Kumar.

Shashadhar Acharya will perform on the fourth and final day.

The show is conceived in four episodes based on its themes . They are Ratri (night), Yodhhas (warriors), Sagar (sea) and trance. Omprakash Solanki, Sushanta Maharana, Govind Mahato, Anil Panchal and Sanjay Khan will accompany Acharya in the show.

Entry to the shows is free.
