MADURAI: Reading, an activity that necessitates a high level of concentration, adds to the conversational skills of the reader. Children who start reading from an early age have good language skills and a better grasp of the subject, thus leading to high intelligence quotient (IQ) level.

One of the aims of The Hindu's Newspaper in Education initiative is to encourage the habit of newspaper reading among students. Class VII students of Velammal Vidyalaya CBSE School were taught finer points of reading skill at a session held recently.

The Resource Person, Saraswathy, explained a formula, PSQ6R, to learn how to read right — ‘P' stands for purpose; ‘S' for ‘survey' — the student, before stating reading must have made a picture of what he is going to read for the day' ‘Q' stands for ‘question' — once a survey is done in an intuitive way, the student will be able to ask himself how he would approach the subject.

The ‘6 Rs' stand for Read Selectively, Recite, Reduce, Record, Reflect, and Review. Select the content that you are going to read, read it more than once if needed, reduce the content that you are going to read, record the content, reflect on it, and do a proper review.

She asked the students to select a paragraph from the day's newspaper and asked them to apply the formula and write down the purpose of reading the article.

She asked the students to reflect and question themselves on “what do I know about the topic? And what is that I need to improve, add, and delete.” She asked the students to read the material more than once and give their reactions about what they read and do a review on it.
