VISAKHAPATNAM: The remark of a corporator led to protest by TDP members, particularly women, bringing the proceedings of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation's budget meeting to a halt for sometime on Monday. Speaking on the property tax hike, TDP corporator P. Veeralakshmi commented that those in the council should be ashamed for not being successful in their efforts to reduce the quantum of property tax hike. Reacting, Congress member Galla Srinivasa Rao said hundreds of crores of rupees were being spent on development works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and the corporation had won awards for its performance at the national level. There was noting to be ashamed about and the member should feel ashamed, he said. Taking exception to the remark, TDP members were on their feet and women members rushed to the podium and staged a sit-in. The meeting resumed after Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao and Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai offering apologies to Ms. Veeralakshmi if she was hurt by the remark.
