Eight polluting textile units shut down

Staff Reporter

ERODE: A team of officials from the Revenue department and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) shut down eight textile processing units in the suburbs of Erode on Monday for causing pollution.

The team, led by Revenue Divisional Officer R. Sukumar, conducted surprise inspections in eight textile processing units located in Ellampalayam and Villarasampatti areas and found them letting out untreated effluents in the vacant lands and water carrying channels.

Officials said that they had received widespread complaints from the people and farmers in the area that the units were causing irreversible damage to the environment and were not following any of the government rules.

Meanwhile, farmers in the district had appealed to the TNPCB and the district administration to close all the textile processing and tannery units polluting the environment.
