Mariyappa is Bangalore Urban ZP president

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Congress member C. Mariyappa was elected president of the Bangalore Urban district Zilla Pacnahat even as Bharatiya Janata Party members boycotted the elections alleging that one of their members had been kidnapped. Janata Dal (Secular) member T.G. Annapoorna Krishnamurthy was elected vice-president.

The elections were conducted by Bangalore Divisional Commissioner K.S. Prabhakar. Of the 34 members of the zilla panchayat, there are 16 BJP members, 14 Congress members and four Janata Dal (Secular) members. Of the BJP members, 15 were present.

Alleging that the BJP member representing Konappana Agrahara V. Babu had been kidnapped, BJP leader K.M. Maregowda said that a case in this regard had been filed with the police. He demanded that the elections be postponed. When the election officer did not agree to the demand, the BJP members walked out while the Congress and JD(S) members took part in the poll process.
