Demand for railway divisional headquarters in Gulbarga

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The Hyderabad Karnataka Praja Samiti has demanded that Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee include in the Railway Budget a proposal to introduce a Garib Rath train from Solapur to Bangalore, touching Gulbarga city and Wadi junction, to reduce the rush on Bangalore-bound trains in the section.

Umakant Nigudigi, president of the samiti, and other members presented a memorandum addressed to Ms. Banerjee to the station manager of the Gulbarga Railway Station on Tuesday.

In another memorandum, members of the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by president Gopalkrishna Raghoji demanded that Ms. Banerjee concede the long-pending demand of the region to establish a railway divisional headquarters in Gulbarga city.

In the memorandum, Mr. Raghoji pointed out that the recommendation was first made in 1984 by the H.C. Sarin Committee. However, it had not been acted upon.

Setting up of the divisional headquarters in Gulbarga would ensure direct and indirect employment to more than 5,000 people and help in the industrialisation of the backward district.
