National Games / Shagun traps gold

RANCHI: Birendeep Sodhi produced the day's lone record in the men's trap event of the 34th National Games shooting competition here on Wednesday.

En route to the gold medal, Sodhi improved two records with scores of 117 and 138 points respectively. The previous record was held by Zorawar Singh (105 and 123) in the Guwahati Games.

Shagun Chowdhary of Rajasthan won the first-ever trap event for women with a score of 80.

Rajput, Tejaswini win

Services' Sanjeev Rajput and Tejaswini Sawant of Maharashtra won the 50m rifle prone in close contests.

Rajput, who was consistent throughout the 10-shot final, had a worst score of 10 but the 10.9 in the final attempt gave him the gold with a total of 690.6.

Bengal's Joydeep Karmakar, who was just 0.2 behind going into the last shot, floundered by finishing with a 10.0. Uttar Pradesh won the team honours.

Tejaswini had no such problem as she shot a perfect 100 in the sixth and final series to retain the gold. “It is a difficult range to shoot because of the wind, but I managed to shoot better than the others,'' she said. Her team Maharashtra also won the team gold.

Biggest win

After Manipur thrashed Tripura 24-0 in a preliminary league match of the women's event at Jamshedpur, it was the turn of Bengal to hammer Tripura 26-0, a record margin. Manipur won its second game beating Assam 2-0 while Tamil Nadu lost to Haryana 0-1.

In the men's event, Delhi and Jharkhand drew 2-2 while it ended 1-1 in the encounter between Goa and Punjab.
