CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday commenced work on gantry girders and signboards on roads at a cost of Rs.12.22 crore.

Inspecting the work on Sardar Patel Road, Mayor M.Subramanian said, “The facilities would be of use to tourists and other visitors to the city. Work on installation of such facilities in 5,000 locations across the city will be completed in 45 days.”

The Tamil names of places on signboards and signage have been cleared by a panel that included eminent Tamil professors. The project, taken up in three packages, includes traffic signage with retro-reflective material and stainless steel nameboards.

Mr. Subramanian said the gantry girders with signboards would be installed on 239 bus route roads and traffic junctions.

Stainless steel nameboards would be put up on 1,083 streets. Signage depicting significant landmarks, places of worship, school zone, no entry area, no horn, right turn or left turn and other relevant information would be placed in 3,957 locations. The signage would be installed according to the norms of the Indian Roads Congress and ensure uniformity across Indian cities.

Officials of the Corporation said the new signboards on gantries, with blue background and white letters, would ensure optimum visibility for motorists.

The retro-reflective boards with international standards would last for at least 15 years. Corporation Commissioner D.Karthikeyan was present.
