Lawyers boycott courts

KRISHNAGIRI/DHARMAPURI: About 1,500 lawyers in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts boycotted the courts on Thursday as part of their two-day State-wide agitation. The boycott was in protest against the delay in increasing the Lawyers' Welfare Fund to Rs. 5 lakh as announced by the Chief Minister.
S. Liyakath Ali Khan, president, Krishnagiri District Bar Association, said that the lawyers were disappointed that the government had not announced the increase in the last session of the Legislative Assembly. Mr. Khan said, the association wanted the government to initiate action against police officials who attacked a lawyer on the High Court campus a year ago.
More than 700 lawyers in Hosur, Uthangarai, Pochampalli, and Denkanikottai boycotted the taluk courts in Krishnagiri district.
Boycotting the district court in Krishnagiri, over 100 lawyers staged a demonstration in front of it. Mr. Khan led the demonstration.
Over 100 lawyers staged a demonstration in front of the Dharmapuri District Court. Over 700 lawyers in Dharmapuri district boycotted taluk courts.
